Take the testAbout the Vocabulary Size Test
Vocabulary size is one of the strongest predictors of language proficiency. This free test estimates how many words you know by sampling from frequency-ranked word lists. You'll see 50 words drawn from 10 frequency bands (from the 500 most common words to the 10,000th most common), and your recognition rate at each level is extrapolated to estimate your total vocabulary.
The test maps your estimated vocabulary size to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) scale, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (mastery). For Japanese and Mandarin, results also map to JLPT and HSK levels respectively.
Results include a percentile ranking among other learners, the number of words needed to reach your next CEFR level, and a downloadable image you can share on social media. The entire test is free, requires no account, and takes about 2 minutes.

Methodology & Sources
The word lists in each test were curated to approximate frequency rankings informed by established corpora and frequency research. They are not direct exports from any single corpus. Words are organized into 10 frequency bands covering the most common 10,000 words, with 5 words sampled from each band to create a 50-word adaptive test. Recognition rate per band is extrapolated to estimate total vocabulary size.
CEFR vocabulary thresholds are based on research by Paul Nation and the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. For Japanese and Mandarin, results also map to JLPT and HSK levels respectively.
This is an estimation tool for fun and self-assessment. Results are approximate and should not be taken as a precise measurement of vocabulary knowledge.
