Mastering Dutch Verb Conjugation
Dutch verbs change their form depending on the subject and tense. While Dutch verb conjugation is simpler than many Romance languages — with no subjunctive mood in everyday use — it still presents challenges, particularly with strong (irregular) verbs and the distinction between regular and irregular past tenses.
Regular (weak) verbs form their past tense by adding -te/-de to the stem, and their past participle with ge-...-t/-d. The choice between -t and -d depends on the final consonant of the stem (the "'t kofschip" rule). Strong verbs change their stem vowel in the past tense and past participle (e.g. schrijven → schreef → geschreven).
Dutch uses compound tenses extensively. The present perfect (voltooid tegenwoordige tijd) with hebben or zijn + past participle is the standard way to talk about the past in spoken Dutch. The future is formed with zullen + infinitive, and the conditional with zou/zouden + infinitive.
The best way to learn Dutch conjugation is through consistent practice. Use the quiz mode above to test yourself on the tenses you find most challenging, and refer to the conjugation tables whenever you need to check a specific form.
