Mastering Spanish Verb Conjugation
Spanish verbs change their form depending on the subject, tense, and mood. This process, called conjugation, is one of the most important aspects of Spanish grammar. While English relies heavily on auxiliary verbs and word order, Spanish encodes much of this information directly in the verb ending.
Regular verbs follow predictable patterns based on their infinitive ending: -ar (like hablar), -er (like comer), and -ir (like vivir). Once you learn the endings for each group, you can conjugate thousands of verbs. However, many of the most commonly used Spanish verbs are irregular, including ser, estar, ir, tener, and hacer.
The indicative mood is used for statements of fact and includes tenses like the present (presente), preterite (pretérito), imperfect (imperfecto), future (futuro), and conditional (condicional). The subjunctive mood expresses wishes, doubts, and hypothetical situations, while the imperative mood is used for commands and requests.
The best way to learn conjugation is through consistent practice. Use the quiz mode above to test yourself on the tenses you find most challenging, and refer to the conjugation tables whenever you need to check a specific form.
