Mastering Italian Verb Conjugation
Italian verbs change their form depending on the subject, tense, and mood. This process, called conjugation, is one of the most important aspects of Italian grammar. Like other Romance languages, Italian encodes subject information directly in the verb ending, often making subject pronouns optional.
Regular verbs follow predictable patterns based on their infinitive ending: -are (like parlare), -ere (like vedere), and -ire (like dormire). The -are group is the largest and most productive. Some -ire verbs like capire and finire insert -isc- in certain forms. Many common Italian verbs are irregular, including essere, avere, andare, fare, and dire.
The indicative mood is used for statements of fact and includes tenses like the present (presente), remote past (passato remoto), imperfect (imperfetto), future (futuro semplice), and conditional (condizionale). The subjunctive mood (congiuntivo) is widely used in Italian for expressing doubt, wishes, opinions, and in dependent clauses after certain conjunctions.
The best way to learn conjugation is through consistent practice. Use the quiz mode above to test yourself on the tenses you find most challenging, and refer to the conjugation tables whenever you need to check a specific form.
