Mastering French Verb Conjugation
French verbs change their form depending on the subject, tense, and mood. This process, called conjugation, is one of the most important aspects of French grammar. While English relies heavily on auxiliary verbs and word order, French encodes much of this information directly in the verb ending.
Regular verbs follow predictable patterns based on their infinitive ending: -er (like parler), -ir (like finir), and -re (like vendre). The -er group is by far the largest, containing the majority of French verbs. However, many of the most commonly used French verbs are irregular, including être, avoir, aller, faire, and pouvoir.
The indicative mood is used for statements of fact and includes tenses like the present (présent), simple past (passé simple), imperfect (imparfait), future (futur simple), and conditional (conditionnel). The subjunctive mood expresses wishes, doubts, and hypothetical situations, while the imperative mood is used for commands and requests.
The best way to learn conjugation is through consistent practice. Use the quiz mode above to test yourself on the tenses you find most challenging, and refer to the conjugation tables whenever you need to check a specific form.
